Product Recall Widget

As if the FDA’s use of Twitter to deliver product recall information wasn’t enough to establish new media as the new frontier in product recall communication, the FDA is also employing a Peanut Product Recall Widget to distribute the latest information about the recent peanut/salmonella recall. And, because the FDA provides the code for the widget, anyone can post the latest peanut product recall information on their blog or website. All you have to do is cut-n-paste the code… and technology does the rest.

To test the tool, I added the FDA’s peanut product recall widget on my site. It is, indeed, easy to implement and easy to use.

Not only does this demonstrate the social benefits of new media, it also further strengthens the connection between technical communication, new media, and product recalls. More research by academics and practicing technical communicators is definitely needed to help shape the future of product recalls and electronic delivery of product safety information.
