Another Priest, Another Denial

Another Catholic Priest has been accused of genocide crimes. According to an article in The Times, “An international arrest warrant is being prepared by Rwanda for Father Emmanuel Uwayezu following the discovery that he is working in a parish at Empoli, near Florence. It will accuse him of direct complicity in the massacre of more than 80 students, aged from 12 to 20 at a Catholic school where he was headmaster.”

Uwayezu is denying any involvement and has so far attempted to evade any responsibility by claiming that he actually tried to save the students but was unable to.

The situation is also putting pressure on The Vatican, which faces accusations of not doing enough to uncover potential genocide perpetrators who may be hiding in the Catholic church as priests. Uwayezu is the second Rwandan Priest found living in Florence. Athanase Seromba was discovered previously and is serving a life sentence for genocide crimes, despite The Vatican’s long-time denial of the charges against him.
